This innovative approach to payroll aims to improve financial well-being for employees, reduce financial stress, and increase job satisfaction. By offering a seamless and user-friendly platform, DailyPay enhances the financial stability and flexibility of its users (DailyPay, n.d.).
My placement year at DailyPay has been an extraordinary journey of growth, learning, and practical application of my academic knowledge in a real-world setting. As an MSc Data Science student, I had the unique opportunity to apply data-driven techniques and analytical thinking to various aspects of mobile application development. This experience not only enriched my understanding of data science but also highlighted the critical importance of user experience (UX) in technology. This reflective piece aims to describe and analyze the tasks I undertook, the connections between my academic studies and my placement, and the insights I gained along the way.
Task Undertaken: A Detailed Analysis
Unified App Development
The most significant project I contributed to was the development of the Unified App. This new application integrates the functionalities of the card app and the Early Wage Access (EWA) bank app, providing a cohesive and streamlined user experience. The Unified App represents a major step forward in delivering comprehensive financial services through a single platform.
Maintaining the Friday Card App
In addition to developing the Unified App, I was part of the team responsible for maintaining the Friday Card App. This involved ensuring its continued functionality and reliability as it transitioned towards being sunsetted.
Personal Contributions and Responsibilities
Throughout my placement, I was entrusted with a variety of tasks and projects, working independently on features and bug fixes that had a direct impact on the production app. This level of trust and responsibility made me feel valued as a significant member of the team. Some of the key tasks I undertook include:
Transfer Limit Reached Screen
- Description: Designed and implemented a screen to notify users when they attempt a transfer after reaching their limit.
- Analysis: This project required a deep understanding of user needs and behavior. By applying data science principles, I analyzed user interactions to design a feature that provides clear and immediate feedback.
- Presentation: I presented and demoed this feature to the team, showcasing its functionality and the rationale behind its design.
Login End-to-End Flow Enhancement
- Description: Improved the login process for better usability and reliability.
- Analysis: Through data analysis, I identified bottlenecks and implemented changes that reduced login failures and improved user satisfaction.
Deposit a Check Screen
- Description: Created a screen to guide users through the process of depositing checks into their DP Card account.
- Task Breakdown:
- Steps Overview: Informed users about the three steps required to deposit a check.
- Account Information: Displayed the user's encrypted account number and routing number, making them copyable to the clipboard when decrypted.
- CTA Implementation: Included a “Deposit a check” call-to-action (CTA) that prompts a sheet explaining the redirection to a third-party app.
- Analysis: This feature required careful consideration of security and user convenience, ensuring that sensitive information is both accessible and protected.
- Presentation: I demoed this feature to the team, explaining its functionality and user benefits.
Disable Buttons During Request Processing
- Description: Ensured buttons remain disabled during request processing to prevent multiple actions.
- Analysis: This required understanding user interaction data to implement a solution that enhances UX without compromising functionality.
Bug Fixes and Performance Optimization
Maintaining high standards of code quality and performance was another crucial aspect of my role. Some significant tasks included:
Loader Not Stopping on Transfer Failure
- Description: Fixed an issue where the loader did not stop after a transfer failure.
- Analysis: Data-driven debugging helped identify the problem, and the solution improved user feedback mechanisms.
CVV Attempts Fix
- Description: Addressed issues related to multiple CVV attempts, enhancing security and user experience.
- Analysis: This task involved identifying patterns in user errors and implementing solutions that minimize security risks while maintaining usability.
Dependency Version Bumps
- Description: Updated dependencies to ensure the application used the latest enhancements and security patches.
- Analysis: This task involved evaluating the impact of updates on performance and stability, guided by data analysis.
Adjust Bottom Padding in Transaction History Screen
- Description: Improved the layout for better readability.
- Analysis: User feedback data helped identify the need for this change, demonstrating how small adjustments can significantly impact user experience.
Links Between Academic Studies and Placement
Data Science Applications
My coursework in data science provided a solid foundation for my placement tasks. Key areas of overlap included:
Data Analysis and Visualization
- Application: I used data analysis techniques to understand user behavior and make informed design decisions. For example, visualizing login attempts helped identify patterns leading to failures, guiding the enhancements we implemented.
- Tools and Techniques: Utilizing MySQL for querying user data to investigate issues and Tableau for visual data exploration were practical applications of my academic learning.
Machine Learning and Predictive Analytics
- Application: Although my primary focus was on UX, understanding machine learning principles helped in tasks like optimizing performance and predicting potential issues. For instance, analyzing user interaction data to predict and preemptively address points of friction.
Big Data Technologies
- Application: Working with large datasets to analyze user interactions and application performance was crucial. Techniques learned in my data science courses were directly applicable in managing and interpreting this data effectively.
Data Structures and Algorithms
- Application: Applying principles of data structures and algorithms was essential in writing efficient and maintainable code. Each feature and bug fix required a solid understanding of these principles to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Enhancing Academic Understanding
Conversely, my placement experience enriched my academic pursuits by providing practical insights:
